ODF Statement on the Recent Visit of its delegation to Finefinne

Official ODF LogoA senior delegation of the Oromo Democratic Front (ODF) was dispatched to Finefinne (Addis Ababa) on March 18, 20015 to kick-start stalled peace talks with the Ethiopian government. Regrettably, despite verbal overtures, no face-to-face talks could be held. Hence, our delegates had to RETURN prematurely to Europe on the 22nd of March 2015. After two years of relentless efforts to engage the Ethiopian government from outside, the ODF took the unilateral action of sending a high-level delegation led by its President, Mr. Leenco Lata. The delegation arrived in Addis on 19 March 2015.

The Oromo Democratic Front (ODF) decided from its inception to pursue the path of peaceful political struggle to defend the rights of the Oromo people and secure freedom, democracy, and prosperity for all peoples in Ethiopia. Accordingly, basing itself in the country and establishing itself among its constituents at home, and REGISTERING and legalizing it as a political party able to play its part in the country’s democratization has been and continues to be ODF’s highest priority. To this principled end, we have been trying to engage all political actors in Ethiopia including the ruling party and the government. But, despite out best efforts, negotiations with the government to resolve outstanding issues and facilitate our re-entry into the political process could not commence in earnest.
This incident does not mark the end of the road but rather only the start of our efforts to ground our organization among our people in our country. Acutely realizing that the road of peace is long, treacherous, and complicated and paved with innumerable obstacles, we are determined more than ever before to stay the course. Accordingly, we would relentlessly CONTINUE with our efforts to engage all political actors in our country, in order to establish a just and genuinely democratic order and a sustainable and equitable development in Ethiopia.
Ethiopia is once again at a crossroads. Preventing a relapse and moving the country along the road of peace, democracy, and sustainable development REQUIRES political will, especially on the part of the ruling party. Reaffirming our unwavering commitment for peaceful and democratic transformation, we therefore call upon all actors, the ruling party in particular, and its supporters in the international community to respond to our efforts positively and support the just demands of our peoples to live in freedom and dignity in their country.

TPLF, Take off Your Hands from Oromo Land

By Kassim Sheimo*
Oromo terrestrial land has become a precious commodity for the successive Abyssinian ruling classes ever since the reign of Menelik to the present day TPLF/EPRDF regime. Under the Menelik and Haile-Silassie Amhara-dominated feudal system, Oromo land was ransacked by the regime-loyalists and the Orthodox Church of Abyssinia. The Orthodox Church of Abyssinia, not only robbed the Oromo of their land, but also became an instrumental tool in enforcing the regimes’ racist policy by preaching the divinity of kings, the supremacy Amhara – the supremacy their culture and language – and the inferiority of the Oromo and other nations in the South of the country. Through this coordination of the Church and the kings – and their close association, millions of Oromo farmers lost their precious land to these preys. Much fertile and coffee lands in Central, Southern and Southeastern and Western Oromia had been plundered, divided and occupied by the land tenure elements of the kings, the princes, the princesses, the Orthodox Church of Abyssinia, theirFitawarary’sDajazamach’sQangi Azthmach’sIndaraase’s, … Ballabase’s.
The land tenure system gave these elements the opportunity to deeply embed in the land, drawing large numbers of Oromo and southern nations and nationalities out of their lands, villages and communities, thereby forcing them to fall into direct and indirect control of the regimes’ authorities at different levels of the oppressive apparatus and reducing the indigenous people of the land into servitude and slavery. The feudal institutions defined the political authority and hierarchy around the land ownership by establishing a patron-client relationship in which clients were inferior in social classes and ranks. The feudal landlord would possess greater power, wealth and prestige as to when, where, how and on what term and condition he or she controlled the land. The political arrangements were established from the local, the state, the regional to the national levels in such a way that the Amhara elites and regime-loyalists got leeway to mobilize and control large swaths of land under their control. The losses of land – along with the psychological warfare against the Oromo language, the Oromo belief, the Oromo culture; the restricted freedom of movement and association; and the unjust property ownership system – left millions of Oromo and many Southerns to suffer under the systematical and institutionalized discrimination. The regimes instituted the second-class citizenship by denying or limiting the Oromo people’s legal, civil, economic and social rights. The Oromo people were subjected to mistreatment, displacement and neglect at the hands of the putative feudal landlords. In much of the country, Oromo children were denied basic and fundamental educational opportunities. Few of those who had gotten the opportunity were indoctrinated by the Amhara culture, philosophy, belief and language to glorify the Abyssinian feudal supremacy. That influence is still evident among many educated under that system – these have assumed leadership roles among some political groups and constantly denounce the Oromo struggle for the right to self-determination and freedom. Among many of these prominent politicians are Ob. Leenco Lata and his followers. They are, I believe, the products of such institutionalized indoctrination – which has made them glorify the immiyye Ethiopia – even under the current repressive and suppressive totalitarian TPLF regime.
Many thanks to the determined prominent Oromo politicians who resisted and contributed remarkably for the overthrowing of the feudal system and the monarchy – which were preached and believed by many as divine and supreme beings that would never be challenged by a human force. The Students Movement in the early 1970’s galvanized and injected full energy into the struggle against the repressive, backward monarchy. The mass movements in urban centers – along with the peasants’ resistance against the feudal land policy – had precipitated into the downfall of the “King of Kings – The Majesty Haile Sillasse” regime.
In March 1975 the Derge military regime issued a sweeping land reform proclamation, which brought about a complete transformation in the complex feudal system that had made the Oromo people landless. Much of the Oromo land was recovered, and millions of Oromos were allowed to take over much of their indigenous lands led by peasant associations. That ambitious land reform faced hurdles as it was taking into full effects. It was hijacked by the Socialist ideology that only allowed the land utilization in collective forms, rather than redistribution to individual Oromo farmers. Many youth revolutionists and intellectuals believed that the socialist system was the best way to handle such a difficult and sensitive issue like the land reform. The peasant associations, created by the revolutionary development administration at the local, provincial and national levels, were the powerful tools in breaking down the feudal fabrics – even though they denied the individual/private ownership of the land. However, it is fair to say that Oromo peasants have enjoyed from that collective ownership.
Beside some concrete steps like the land reform, the Derg regime failed to produce other political, economic, and social reforms in the country that was brutalized by the backward feudal system. Instead, the Derg waged expensive wars against the Oromo, the Eritrean, the Tigrean and the Ogaden national movements – and as a result of these national liberation wars, millions of people from all sides are believed to have been killed. Many prominent Oromo politicians were killed and eliminated; some of them were thrown into notorious jails. Even though some Oromos took political and military leadership under the Derg regime, the fundamental change had yet to materialize for the Oromo. The Derg regime was finally overthrown by the combined struggles of the national movements in 1991.
The land reform that took deep root during the Derg regime started to take a radical twist under the TPLF junta. The TPLF declared that the land belonged to the government. Imagine, the government is TPLF, and, therefore, it is logical to say that the land and its resources belong to them. It has instituted a very ambivalent land transformation in which the government has been declared to be the sole owner of the land whereas the farmers, and others who own businesses on the land, are nothing more than lease-owners. Broadly speaking, we can distinguish two antagonistic political discourse on the land question: (1) the discourse of fairness and state protection that argues for the state ownership, and (2) the discourse of privatization and efficiency. The TPLF government has hidden itself under such ambiguous policy cover, and has started to privatize the Oromo land by selling or leasing to whomever it sees as a potential investor – mostly to their own prominent Tigrean politicians, businessmen/women and their associates. That turns the land ownership into the hands of a few TPLF members – displacing the poor and destitute Oromo farmers and their families with no regards to their rights and livelihoods. Under the TPLF, the land became the most valuable commodity from which many powerful and corrupted TPLF politicians have amassed millions of dollars – by selling, and by building huge businesses and industries on the Oromo farmland – in short, this has re-instituted the feudal system under a neo-feudal lord, the TPLF.
Many local and international conglomerate corporates have started to ally with the TPLF regime – directly or indirectly – joining the frenzy of the illegal land grab in urban vicinity for housing, business and industrial developments, and in rural areas for large-scale crop productions, intended for bio-fuel consumption abroad – all displacing indigenous populations and leaving them for starvation. The land issue is becoming, not only the local issue, but has gained global attention and trends.
As the population growth is exploding, the demand for food and shelter is increasing every year. The climate change and the rise in temperature and extreme weather phenomena – directly related to the global warming – have become more evident and severe. This has caused low crop yields with the seasons that keep changing – making it harder for the farmers to exactly predict the rainy/right seasons to sow. Wild weather and unpredictable weather phenomena are changing what farmers can grow – even using fertilizers. The regime forces, investors, even some of the farmers looking for fertile lands as food prices keep soaring – are cutting down more and more forests. The anarchical land policy created by the regime plus the ever increasing population – along with the changing weather patterns – keep the food price higher and higher. These factors have made the land issue to be at the center of the major conflict in the Ethiopia Empire. TPLF eyes to change the demographic distribution of population so that – in the long run, no one can claim the land except the few Tigrean elites like Abay Tsehaye. His deplorable and outrageous verbal outburst shows how far TPLF has gone deep – aiming at dislodging Oromo farmers from their fertile land. I argue that the TPLF policy is the mirror-image of the South African Apartheid system – in which 5% White minority controlled 95% the land and its resources – even decades after the Apartheid regime has been overthrown. Under the so-called Addis Ababa Master Plan, TPLF is planning to forcefully kick the Oromo people out of their lands with promises of compensations that neither are adequate nor fair. Under such threats, millions of Oromo farmers living in the immediate vicinity of the capital city are under a constant nightmare that, one day, they will wake up to messy environment when TPLF tugs evict them from their lands and properties on which they have lived for centuries. This will, for sure, create destitute poverty and tenancy institutions, and forced mass rural-urban migrations of landless Oromos – who will be servants of the new conglomerate Tigrean, Chinese, Indian, Amhara and Arabian landlords. That means, it is a matter of time that the place we all call home, Oromiyaa, will have a radical transformation unless we, not only put up stiff resistance, but also fight to

Statement of the Executive Committee of the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF)

——————–
OLF_Statement
The Executive Committee (EC) of the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) held its meeting from February 19th to 23rd, 2015. This meeting was the first for the newly formed Executive Committee at the reunification of the two groups – OLF Shanee Gimii and OLF-Transitional Authority.
At this meeting, detailed report and analysis on the general situation of the Oromo people’s liberation struggle and the Oromo masses, the situation of the regime and the region as a whole was presented by the OLF Chairman. In addition, the heads of the various departments reported on activities of their departments. Likewise, the chairman of the Coordinating Committee of the planed National Congress has presented detailed report on the progress of the work of the Committee. The meeting has thoroughly assessed the various reports and passed relevant decisions.
The EC conducted a thorough analysis and review of the performance of the organization and its leadership. Hence, it took important decisions aimed at transforming the day to day management of the work of the struggle. In addition, the EC addressed the situation of the Oromo people in general, the brutality of the Ethiopian regime against the Oromo people and others, peace and stability in the Horn of Africa and global issues and laid down vital directives to intensify the liberation struggle.
The EC discussed the recent detailed reports of a number of human rights organizations and government agencies on the violation of Oromo human rights. It is realized that in spite of the systematic human right violations being committed against Oromo individuals and the nation in general, the Western governments that are sustaining the Ethiopian brutal regime continue to provide military, diplomatically and financial support to it.
Particular attention was also given to the so called “Addis Abeba Master Plan” aimed at dismembering Oromia and the appropriation of farm lands and the destruction of virgin forests that house unique and rare animals and plants. Some of the areas include holy sites.
The EC call on members of the Front:
The meeting solemnly remembered all the martyrs and those members and other suffering in the hands of the enemy. The EC has commended the progress of our struggle and the steadfastness and dedication of the members. The EC asks the members, both inside the country and outside to redouble their efforts to bring to an end the sever oppression and exploitation of the Oromo people.
Call on the Oromo People:
We greatly admire and proud of the recent intensified mass movement of the Oromo people, particularly the struggle that lead by the youth(Qeerroo). As long as the regime continuous to violate the Oromo people’s right to self-determination, a right that is part of the international law, the Oromo people has only one choice – to intensify the liberation struggle.
The EC venerates those Oromo men and women working in the colonial administration for their awareness and resistance against the alien rule. We call on these Oromo nationals working in the police force, army and the bureaucracy of the ruling party, etc., to organize yourselves and actively participate in the ongoing liberation struggle of our people that is fast gathering momentum.
Every Oromo at home and abroad must be conscious of the danger facing the Oromo people at this moment and stand against it in all manners. In particular, the continued enemy sinister plot and manipulation to divide our society on regional and religious grounds so as to weaken our struggle and continue its brutal rule must be exposed to the international community. Therefore, the EC calls upon all Oromo at home and abroad to stand up to this, combat it and expose the atrocious intentions of the regime. We also continue to appeal to all friends and others concerned to show their solidarity with our suffering people.
At this junction, we call upon all Oromo political forces to join hands with us in the continuous effort to liberate our people. We are committed to peacefully resolve tactical differences that may existed between us.
Call on Neighboring Peoples:
The OLF has been making continued efforts to strengthen the friendly relations between the Oromo people and its various neighbors, and in particular to

"Oromos face chilling oppression in Ethiopia" – Columnist Debasish Mitra from India

Columnist Debasish Mitra from India*
In Ethiopia they live like animals, relentlessly persecuted, hunted down like games, killed at will and incarcerated en masse. No mercy is shown even to women and children. They are the Oromos — the largest ethnic group, the most marginalised in Ethiopia and arguably one among the most oppressed people in our planet. Despite their numerical majority, the Oromos, much like the Palestinians, are facing xenophobic oppression.
Amnesty International’s report on the state of existence of the Oromos, published last year, has been damning. It painted a chilling picture of the brutality unleashed by Ethiopian government on the hapless community to which the country’s President, Mulatu Teshome, belongs. The rights group, based in London, said: “At least 5,000 Oromos have been arrested based on their actual or suspected peaceful opposition to the government”. And most of them have been “subjected to treatment amounting to torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment”.
Amnesty researcher Claire Beston has been scathing. She said, “The Ethiopian government’s relentless crackdown on real or imagined dissent among the Oromo is sweeping in its scale and often shocking in its brutality. This is apparently intended to warn, control or silence all signs of ‘political disobedience’ in the region”. Beston, in her report, said in no uncertain terms that she saw “signs of torture, including scars and burns, as well as missing fingers, ears and teeth” on those Oromos she interviewed.
The scenario in the country is perhaps far more terrifying. The United States, in its 2013 Human Rights Report, has pointed out that at least 70,000 persons, including some 2,500 women and nearly 600 children are incarcerated with their mothers, in severely overcrowded six federal and 120 regional prisons. “There also were many unofficial detention centres throughout the country, including in Dedessa, Bir Sheleko, Tolay, Hormat, Blate, Tatek, Jijiga, Holeta, and Senkele,” the report added further.
Plurality, respect for basic democratic values and tolerance for dissent have never been the fortes for which Ethiopia is known in the world. It is for reasons on the contrary the country has already earned a massive notoriety internationally. Corruptions are rampant and behind the façade of development the government in Ethiopia is infamous for selling out the country to the western world and foreign corporations and, of course, for its blatant violation of basic human rights.
What defines Ethiopia today is the greed and corruption of its politicians, especially those in power. The brazenness with which the government is trying to sell out Omo Valley to foreign corporation is a shame and a heinous crime. Twice the size of France and UNESCO World Heritage Site, Omo Valley is known as the ‘cradle of mankind’ which, according to ancient-origins.net, has the world’s largest alkaline lake as well as the world’s largest permanent desert lake.
The Ecologist says, Lake Turkana in Omo Valley was a prehistoric centre for early hominids. Some 20,000 fossil specimens have been collected from the Turkana Basin. Anthropological digs have led to the discovery of important fossilised remains, most notably, the skeleton of the Turkana Boy, (or Nariokotome Boy). Finding Turkana Boy was one of the most spectacular discoveries in palaeoanthropology. His reconstruction comes from the almost perfectly preserved skeleton found in 1984 at Nariokotome near Lake Turkana.

Discovery of the fossilised Turkana Boy, aged between seven and fifteen who lived approximately 1.6 million years ago was a milestone in the study of our origin and ancestry. Yet, to the corrupt, shameless and avaricious Ethiopian government it is of no significance. And neither is the welfare of the indigenous people of the valley who are believed to be the living descendants of the early hominids.
Alas! Ethiopian government wants to sell out this important archaeological treasure trove to foreign corporations where they want to develop sugar, cotton and biofuel plantations. A shameless land grab is underway in Omo Valley where hundreds of more fossilised skeletons of our forefathers are expected to be found and retrieved.
Misrule, human rights violations, hubris, arrogance and corruption plagues Ethiopia. Continuous demagoguery against the Oromos has made Ethiopia sit atop a huge mound of gun powder waiting for a spark to explode. The Oromo Liberation Army (OLA), the armed wing of the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) is getting ready for yet another armed struggle to overthrow the present political dispensation in power.
And given the history of insurgency in Ethiopia the country today seems to be heading fast towards a fresh bout of armed insurrection.
A low intensity struggle has already started as the Oromos are no more in mood to take the oppression, they are in no mood to suffer in silence their marginalisation. The ethnic fire the Ethiopian government has been stoking is gradually turning into an inferno.
